Questions to ask before you purchase your costume:

What kind of costume are you looking for?

Sexy, Scary, Funny, Cute, the list goes on and on, but fortunately many companies will list all of their costumes by these categories to help you find the perfect look you want.

What do you need a costume for?

You should know the type of party or event you are going to. Will it be a family outing or a night out, is it home party, bar party, work party, is there a contest, do you bring food will it be outside with hayrides, bonfires, and or whatever combination you can think of. What will you be doing, playing pool, singing, dancing,  sitting by a fire, or going through a haunted trail? You should consider these activities when you are making your decision on the type of costume want to wear.

What is your comfort level?

Comfort Level – this is critical to having a great time but many overlook this simple tip. When creating that special look for your costume you want to consider the atmosphere you are going to be in. You want to make sure the costume is not too cumbersome and too large for a very crowded party. You will also want to make sure you know the climate and the type of weather to expect.  When you are freezing it can ruin the night.  It’s always better to be prepared and not need something then to not have extra’s layers and need them.

What if you can’t make up your mind on what to be?

Check out the  top selling costumes of 2009 by they have put together a great list broken down by gender and age. So now if you have something in mind  you can check out what everyone else is doing and change it up or stay with the flow.

Start ahead of time don’t wait till the last minute.

Unless you want your costume to look made up in a hurry (there went a thought about post it notes as a costume)
What I am doing and where I am going has a big bearing on what I am willing to wear and not to wear.  Some nights when no kids are involved then I will be a little more daring  in my costume choice then I would be when they are around. Adults need their fun too!

What makes a great costume?

The special ingredient is the person. With so many options today the  quality of costumes has improved greatly compared to what they were years ago.  It is easy to find a complete costume that will get the wow’s, but what will make it stand out more than anything is the person wearing the costume. How they portray the character or how they acted in their costume.  Check out

These are big conventions where the attendees dress as their favorite character and the costumes are usually handmade or ordered since they are not traditional costumes offered. All though more and more shops are finding the Anime section is growing and starting to offer costumes of that genre.

Making your costume

Making your costume can be fun if your are creative. I have seen many people shop at thrift stores to get apparel for their costume idea and its quite cleverly put together. Having a college town nearby I have seen some clever costumes drummed up. Some times the clothes in your closet will work with just a few accessories.

OK so I have a few stories to tell about my thrift store finds for creative and last minute costumes. I have also bought costumes on line. I think the best part is being creative with different and mixing costumes up. My daughter came up with quite mix between something old like 70’s style with something new like grunge style. I can’t wait to see what she will look like. I am actually excited for her. She is so creative. Me i am still working on it. Tending towards the Zoombie world but i really prefer that Vampires look. Of course the Gothic tinkerbel is appealing. What do you think?

Have any clever ideas for mix matching costumes?
